Testing your connection

Click this link to play the streamed video. 320x240 size

  1. Windows Media Player should startup. You should see messages - connecting and then buffering.
  2. Windows Media Player should alternate at the bottom of the screen between the clip title and the connection speed.

Notes:
The video has been encoded at 100K and 43K (single ISDN users). You should receive the correct version automatically according to the amount of bandwidth available.

Problems?

If the link does not work try the following in Windows Media Player. File>OpenURL and type in mms://media.wsgfl.org.uk/test/pinball-100k-43k.wmv
If you can now see the test video then for the live webcasts you may need to goto File>OpenURL and type in mms://media.wsgfl.org.uk/wstv1 [note change wstv1 to whatever channel is being used]

You may be asked to download a CODEC. This is ok. A CODEC is a bit of software that can read different video formats.
Using XP or Windows 2000? If you are not logged on as an administrator or power user the computer will not allow you to install software. The CODEC won't install and you won't see the video. Ask the school technician or administrator to help if need be.

Quality not so good on playback. Try right clicking the video in Media Player and choose Video Size > 50%. This should give a better picture quality.

Try using Windows Media Player 9. This version is more reliable for streaming video.

If this doesn't connect check Tools>Options and check the connect to Internet tab. Tick the option if it is not ticked.

If you still cannot connect check this option.

Change it to none using the configure button. If this works check that you can still receive Media Player media from other sites.
